Cherohala Skyway

US 129, Tennessee & North Carolina

 

The 41.7 miles of National Scenic Byway that separate Robbinsville, North Carolina and Tellico Plains, TN are probably some of the most beautiful and fun to drive in America. With elevations reaching 5,400 feet, drivers feel as if they are driving in the sky. The Cherohala Skyway is home to “The Tail of the Dragon” which is an 11-mile section of the highway that that features an amazing 318 curves. Not only does this stretch of highway offer breathtaking views and a challenging route, the remoteness also offers the chance of spotting wild life along the curves through the mountains.

 

The Big Sur Coast Highway

With no better views of the Pacific Ocean and its shoreline, the Big Sur Coast Highway, an All-American Road, offers drivers some breathtaking views as well as some adventurous driving along the California coast. The road divides the Santa Lucia Mountains from the rocky Pacific coastline. 90 stunning miles is the length of this bucket list highway to cruise.

Glacier Route 1, Montana

 

Glacier National Park is home to a two-lane highway called Glacier Route 1 that crosses the Continental Divide. Spanning 53 miles through various terrain elements, including glacial lakes, vast cedar forests, valleys and alpine tundra. Logan Pass, the 6,646-foot-high portion of the road that crosses the Continental Divide, as well as the whole route is touted as a national engineering landmark.  The only downside to this iconic road is that the full length is only open from mid-June to mid-October due to weather, so plan accordingly.

 

Denali Highway

The last North American frontier, the Denali Highway through Denali National Park, is one destination that is sure to complete the list of best drives. Totaling over 130 of mostly gravel roads, the Denali Highway takes drivers through vast expanses of tundra all while chasing not so distant mountains and glaciers. Also, there is a wide variety of wildlife that may grace visitors with their presence, namely moose and eagles.

 

Overseas Highway

This National Scenic Byways deemed All-American Road that connects mainland Florida to Key West over a series of 42 bridges and a total of 113 miles. Of the 42 bridges, one of them is fairly well known at Marathon and spans an astounding 7 miles. The breathtaking colors of the tropical waters that range from turquoise to deep green is sure to make this trip to Key West one to remember.

Northern Michigan

 

Voted best scenic autumn drive in America by USA TODAY, northern Michigan’s highway M-22 offers some truly amazing fall color. Stretching 116 miles from Manistee to Traverse City, some of the route is along the breath taking coast of Lake Michigan and the Bays of Grand Traverse, while most of it winds through the scenic countryside and even a few wineries.
