Taking proper care of your vehicle should always be your number one priority, especially with a dynamic Mercedes. It’s important to keep your vehicle in the best shape possible so as to ensure it performs as designed.

There are a number of parts under the hood that can begin to have problems over time, and when these problems arise, it is best to take your vehicle into a specialized mechanic shop for service.

The water pump is an integral part of your vehicle, and when it is leaking, should be inspected and repaired by your preferred Mercedes mechanic. Being neglectful of this could eventually prove detrimental to the vehicle performance you love. If you notice any common signs of a faulty water pump, don’t hesitate to address the issue at Tech Plus Automotive.

What does the water pump do?

Your car’s engine bay gets quite hot when the vehicle is running and requires coolant to ensure nothing overheats. The water pump, as an overview, ensures that the coolant keeps moving through the engine block and helps to maintain the perfect temperature under the hood.

More specifically, the water pump is driven by the serpentine belt and uses centrifugal force to move water. This system is directly related to the engine. As the engine functions, the water pump’s belt is turned, which also turns the water pump’s axle.

When this turning motion occurs, a suction force is created that pulls water from the radiator. As the system continues to turn, the force throws that water against the outer walls of the pump and down a drain which leads to the engine block.

From there, the water travels through all the cylinder heads and eventually gets back to the radiator where the entire process begins once again.

Common Causes for a Water Pump Leak

Given the complexity of the water pump system, there are a number of problems that may arise with the water pump. The biggest of these issues that should be addressed is a leaky water pump. Without repairing this component, it can lead to a loss of radiator fluid and leaking coolant.

In the long term, a water pump leak can prevent your engine from receiving the cooling it desperately needs and could eventually result in an overheating engine. Here are some of the common causes of a water pump leak:

Bad Seal

When it comes to a water pump leak, there are two possible areas where this may be occurring. The first of these two is the shaft seal. Over time, this seal may begin to wear down naturally and coolant and water may begin to leak out of the broken seal. This should be obvious, as green fluid may be on the ground where you park your car.

Water Pump Gasket

A coolant leak that is occurring in the front cover area could mean that the water pump gasket has failed. It is entirely possible that this failure has resulted from rust accumulating in the system and causing the gasket to stop sealing the fluid into the system. Pay attention under the hood of your Mercedes and try to identify spots where this may occur before the problem is exacerbated.
