Oil Leaks in Your Infiniti Engine Mount
by techplusaadmin November 22, 2020As you likely know, vehicles as reliable as Infiniti require proper maintenance to keep all parts in working order. If these parts are not maintained, problems can develop that spiral into additional problems. With this in mind, as a vehicle owner, it should always be your first priority to solve these issues immediately when they arise, otherwise, they may get exponentially worse.
Leaking oil in the engine mount can be a sign of a larger problem, and it should be dealt with as soon as possible so that the performance of your Infiniti does not suffer. Keeping this in mind, there are numerous causes for an oil leak in the engine mount.
To understand why these may occur, it’s imperative that we first look at the path oil takes throughout your vehicle. As a note, along with all other vehicle issues, only trust a professional technician to service your vehicle and never try to patch an oil leak in the engine mount by yourself.
The Oil’s Journey Under Your Hood
The first and primary purpose of oil is to act as a lubricant for your engine. There is a large number of metal parts underneath the hood of your car and they constantly grind against one another. This can result in metal shavings, as well as wear and tear if these parts are not lubricated. Therefore, oil plays a major role in stopping the degradation of these metals under the hood of your car.
Besides simple acting as a lubricant, oil is also a filter of sorts. As it passes through the engine, when needed, it picks up microscopic particles that may damage the engine’s performance if they are left behind. As the oil moves through the system and back to its starting place, the particles are caught in a filter that doesn’t allow them to pass.
Through this, your vehicle’s engine is able to maintain its optimal performance without getting damaged over time. Oil does have a certain lifespan, however, and after a while, the levels begin to decrease and it becomes contaminated. This is why periodic oil changes are so necessary to the overall health of your Infiniti.
Going beyond simple oil changes, however, oil leaks can pose serious problems for your vehicle as they may represent a large leak somewhere else. Additionally, the reason you should not attempt to fix a leak yourself is due to the fact that the leak’s source may not be directly above where you see oil dripping in the engine. Oil may have traveled along with the metal under the hood and is simply accumulating where you see the leak.
Causes of an Oil Leak in the Engine Mount
Rather than attempting to fix an oil leak yourself, focus on understanding what may cause oil to leak into the engine mount to see if the causes line up with other things you have noticed on your vehicle.
- Old Engine Gasket: The engine gasket is responsible for sealing the tubes through which oil may travel to the engine mount and bay. If this gasket is worn down over time, the oil may begin to leak out and into the mount itself.
- Faulty Oil Drain Plug: Your vehicle’s oil drain plug does exactly what the name implies, but a problem with this plug may result in oil spilling under the hood. This plug is located at the top of the oil pan, and it can be loosened naturally over time. If this occurs, oil may begin to accumulate around that area as it leaks out.
- Bad Oil Filter: The same item that stops particles from getting into the rest of the oil can go bad over time and become loose. When this occurs, the oil may slip through the cracks and get places that it shouldn’t be.
