The number of problems that can occur under the hood of your car, even in a car as reliable as BMW, can be worrisome. There are countless parts working together to bring about the power you have come to love in your vehicle, but any of these parts going bad can result in a shoddy performance. If you notice any issues arise, don’t hesitate to bring your BMW into the shop as soon as you possibly can.

One such issue that should be dealt with immediately is a failed cooling fan. This is a serious problem that can result in additional problems, such as an overheating engine. However, to understand the scope of this problem, you need to understand what exactly the cooling fan does and its overall purpose in keeping your vehicle healthy.

What does the cooling fan do?

The cooling fan is a component in your radiator that pulls cool air through the grille of your car and puts it into the radiator. Its placement is directly between the radiator and the engine, but it is also responsible for slowing down the air that is coming through the grille.

In recent years, electronic cooling fans have been released that only activate when absolutely needed under the hood, which is extremely helpful for efficiency purposes.

In short, the radiator is responsible for cooling off the coolant that comes through. Coolant serves the purpose of keeping the engine’s temperature regulated. There is a thermostat housed outside the engine that is constantly monitoring the engine temperature and, when it gets too hot, this gauge will send coolant through the engine in order to cool it off.

As the coolant passes over the engine, it transfers the heat with it and moves on to the radiator. The point of the radiator is to cool off the coolant using the air that is coming in from the grille of the car, via the cooling fan. This coolant is then sent back to its housing compartment until it needs to run over the engine again to cool it off.

Without a working cooling fan, you may have coolant that is too hot and can not cool down the engine. If this occurs, you put your engine at risk of overheating or causing further damage under the hood of the car. Always take your car in to be fixed when you notice a few of the common signs, listed below, that indicate when your vehicle may be having problems.

Signs of a Failed Cooling Fan

Fortunately, there are some signs which will indicate when there is a problem with the cooling fan on your BMW. Be vigilant for these warning signals, as any of them could indicate that you need to take your car in right away:

Cooling Fan Isn’t On

If you suspect that your vehicle is having an issue with the cooling fan and detect that the engine is running hotter than normal, check under the hood of your car after turning on the engine. You can see and hear the cooling fan operating, so you should be able to tell if it is not running at peak efficiency.

Overheating Engine

A major sign that something has gone wrong with the cooling fan is if your engine is constantly overheating. This is a sign that something under the hood isn’t cooling off your engine or the metal components. More often than not, the culprit could be the cooling fan.

Fuse Surge

A fuse surge is a source of the problem with the cooling fan that would cause other issues that may be detected. You may notice electrical issues occur within your vehicle if there is a fuse surge, and more often than not, your cooling fan may be shut down by such a surge.
