Does Liability Insurance Cover Windshield Replacement?

Does Liability Insurance Cover Windshield Replacement

Liability insurance does not cover windshield replacements, but there are several different ways drivers can get help covering the costs related to these replacements.

Liability Car Insurance Overview

The design of liability insurance is to protect drivers financially if they are proved to be at fault in a car accident. This insurance policy will cover expenses related to damages or injuries you caused to other drivers and/or their property.

These covered expenses will make up for any bodily injuries, lost wages, and medical bills for anyone impacted by the accident where you were at fault. Property liability will provide coverage for any repairs or replacements made necessary as a result of the accident. This could mean anything from a vehicle to a fence is covered.

Will Liability Insurance Cover A Windshield Replacement?

Comprehensive coverage, not liability coverage, will often help pay for windshield repairs and replacements. A deductible typically applies to a claim whenever a windshield is ultimately damaged. This means the driver will need to make an upfront payment before coverage by the insurer.

Some insurance policies will have add-ons available, which includes both “full glass coverage” and “zero deductible glass coverage”, for instance. Insurers always prefer covering smaller windshield repairs over a complete replacement. Many insurers may cover small repairs without a deductible. Drivers should always act immediately when filing a claim for windshield issues.

How To File A Claim

Immediately contacting your provider whenever damage has occurred to your windshield is step number one. Most insurers will allow you to file a claim via phone, through mobile apps, or online portals. When filing this claim, make sure to include your insurance policy number, exact date and time of the incident, and a detailed description of how the damage happened.

Drivers need to also report their car’s make, model, year, and exact location of the damage to the car. Generally, most auto repair shops will bill your insurance company directly for the repair/replacement costs.
