Most Volkswagen key fobs will last for years, but a replacement will eventually be necessary. Luckily, replacing the key fob is quite easy. Use our step-by-step guide below to complete this process properly.
Volkswagen Key Batteries Guide
Prior to beginning the process of changing the battery in your Volkswagen key fob, you’ll need to make sure you have the correct battery. There are two different VW key battery replacement options that will depend on the age of your vehicle.
- VW models before 1999: If you are driving an older model featuring a fob that looks like a simple VW car key, you will most likely need a CR 1632 battery.
- VW Models after 1999: The majority of newer models use a fob that looks like a small pod with buttons found on one side. It will also feature a retractable emergency key. You will most likely need a CR2032 battery.
How To Change The Battery In Your VW Key Fob
Changing the battery in a VW key fob is actually quite a simple process. First, ensure you have the new key battery and a small flat-head screwdriver. Use these steps to replace the VW battery:
- Hold the button on the key fob until your emergency key emerges.
- Firmly grasp the fob or attach it to a small metal key ring that you can hold with your index finger.
- Next, find the seam that connects the lid and the base of the fob.
- Use your fingers to create a little distance between the two.
- Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry them apart.
- Make sure you refrain from scratching the inside.
- Remove the dead battery and insert the new one, with the positive side facing upward.
- Tightly close the remote case in order to hold everything in place.
Can You Start The VW Without Your Smart Key?
Do not panic if your key fob is dead and you are stuck outside your vehicle. Even older VW key fobs will feature an emergency key that doesn’t need a battery for operation.
If your vehicle has keyless entry or even a push button start, you can still power the vehicle without a smart key. Simply hold your emergency key below the ignition to start the engine.
